From the Trenches to the Boardroom: A Veteran's Vision for AI-Powered Business
By Justin Joslin, Founder of The Winston Butler
In 2020, the Army medically retired me.
I didn't see it coming — not in the way you imagine these things. I knew my body was breaking down. I knew the injuries were stacking up in ways that couldn't be undone. But there's a particular kind of grief that comes from leaving something you gave everything to, not because you chose to go, but because you couldn't stay.
I was a soldier. That's not a job description — it's an identity. And when they handed me my retirement papers, I had to figure out who I was going to be next.
What the Army Actually Taught Me
People assume that military service is about toughness. Discipline. Following orders. And yes, all of that is true. But the deeper lesson — the one that took me years to fully understand — is about systems.
The Army doesn't win battles through individual heroism. It wins through repeatable systems executed under pressure. Standard operating procedures. Battle rhythms. Commander's intent passed cleanly down a chain of command so that even when communication breaks down, every soldier knows what to do and why.
I spent years teaching that to other soldiers. How to operate in chaos without becoming chaos. How to build a framework so disciplined that good outcomes don't depend on good luck.
That lesson planted a seed I didn't recognize for what it was until much later.
The Gap I Couldn't Stop Thinking About
After I retired, I moved into business coaching. I worked with small business owners — entrepreneurs who were grinding hard, some of them brilliantly smart and deeply motivated — and I kept seeing the same thing.
They were drowning.
Not because they lacked ability. Not because their ideas were bad. But because they were running every function of their business on willpower and improvisation, with no real system underneath them. Sales happened when they had time to make calls. Marketing happened when they remembered to post. Operations ran on memory and sticky notes and a prayer.
As a coach, I could help them build better systems. I could sit with them, map out the processes, show them what a structured approach looked like. But I was a person. I had a finite number of hours. I couldn't be in every room, executing every task, making sure the plan we built together was actually being followed once the coaching call ended.
The founders I worked with needed something that would actually run their business — not advise on it from the outside.
I started asking a different question: what if there was an AI that operated like a trained, disciplined team member? Not a chatbot. Not a dashboard. An AI operator that understood the strategy, executed the tactics, and never dropped the ball because it got pulled into a client emergency or forgot to follow up.
Why I Built The Winston Butler
I named it Winston for a reason. The image I had in mind was a seasoned, loyal, supremely competent executive — the kind of right-hand who anticipates what you need before you ask, executes without hand-holding, and maintains your standards even when you're not in the room.
That's the kind of operator I tried to be in the Army. That's the standard I coached other people toward in business. And that's what I built into Winston.
The Winston Butler is an AI-powered business operating system. It runs outbound sales, manages marketing campaigns, handles daily operations, and gives every founder — regardless of their team size or budget — access to the kind of infrastructure that used to require a full staff.
I built it in 2026 because the technology had finally caught up to the vision. AI had advanced far enough that you could genuinely deploy it as an operator, not just as a tool. And I knew, from six years of working with small business owners, exactly where the gaps were.
What This Means for Other Veterans — and Every Entrepreneur
There are nearly 2.5 million veteran-owned businesses in the United States. A significant number of them are run by people just like me — individuals with exceptional training in systems, leadership, and execution who left the military and entered an entrepreneurial landscape with very little support infrastructure.
We know how to operate. We've been trained to operate in conditions far more difficult than a competitive market. But operating a business alone, without a team, without the resources that larger competitors take for granted — that's a different kind of battle.
Winston is built for that battle.
For the veteran entrepreneur who knows exactly what they want to build but doesn't have the capital to hire a team yet — Winston is the team. For the disabled veteran who can't operate at the pace they once could but refuses to let that stop them from building something — Winston carries the load. For the business coach, the consultant, the service provider who is tired of wearing every hat — Winston takes the hats off.
This isn't charity. This isn't a special program for veterans that trades on service for sympathy. This is a genuine competitive advantage — an AI operator that executes strategy with the discipline I was trained to bring to every mission I was ever given.
The Mission Continues
I medically retired from the Army, but I didn't retire from the fight. I just changed the terrain.
Building The Winston Butler is the most meaningful work I've ever done outside of service. Not because it's mine — but because of what it can do for the people who need it most: the first-time founder, the veteran business owner, the entrepreneur who's been told they have to earn scale before they can afford infrastructure.
You don't have to do this alone. You were never supposed to.
